SPH Modeling of Viscous Flow Past a Circular Cylinder Interacting with a Free Surface

Single-phase two-dimensional flow past a circular cylinder intersecting, or close to, a free surface at a Reynolds number of 180 is discussed in this talk. Low and moderate Reynolds number free-surface viscous flows are relevant for various areas of Engineering, in particular additive manufacturing and 3D printing. Numerical simulations are presented, mostly carried out using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The wake behavior for Froude numbers between 0.3 and 2.0, based on the diameter, and for submergence-diameter ratios between −0.5 and 2.5 is examined. This range significantly extends existing literature on the topic. Vorticity shed by the cylinder, vortex generation due to free-surface breaking, and mixing processes are discussed.

Antonio Souto-Iglesias is a Naval Architect, PhD, and Associate Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). He belongs to the Model Basin Research Group (CEHINAV), the Fluid Mechanics and Aerospace propulsion Department (DMFPA) and the Naval Architecture Faculty (ETSIN) of UPM. His research interests are in the fields of experimental and numerical methods in Hydrodynamics, with most of his work dealing with sloshing flows either through experiments or with particle methods (SPH).
