    Arbia Ben Khodja, a Michelin CIFRE PHD student in the LHEEA Laboratory, received the Libersky Prize for the best work by a student at the 15th International SPHERIC Workshop, which was held virtually from 8 to 11 June 2021 from New York. 24 PhD students were in the running. Arbia's paper was on the "Validation of coupled SPH-FE hydroplaning simulations using PIV measurements".

Equipped with a strong managerial culture, they are capable of placing scientific subjects into a global context incorporating environmental and societal issues.Centrale Nantes offers a postdoctoral position available within the framework of a collaborative project funded by the French National Agency. The recruited candidate will work at LHEEA laboratory in the research group Dynamic of Urban and Coastal Atmosphere (DAUC). The general objective of the DAUC group is to improve the understanding and the modelling of the physical processes involved in the dynamics and thermodynamics of the lower atmosphere and its complex interactions with land and sea surfaces. This research relies on Large-eddy simulation atmospheric models and dedicated field experiments or wind tunnel studies.
  • Publication of the SPECIES project report on the potential impact of MRE project power cables on coastal benthic ecosystems

    The summary report of the SPECIES project, which was published on 21 May 2021, documents the potential impact associated with the submarine power cables of MRE projects, a recurring issue in consultation processes. The results of this project, coordinated by France Energies Marines and under the scientific direction of Ifremer, are reassuring and do not show any major negative impacts, but do call for further study, particularly with regard to the impact of electromagnetic fields in situ. The SEM-REV team contributed to this project.

  • An instrumented mast installed as part of the ePARADISE project

    Within the framework of the ePARADISE project, led by the LHEEA, with the CSTB, MerAgitée and the VALOREM group, an 80-metre instrumented mast was installed at the end of October, for a period of 18 months, on the wind farm at Saint Hilaire de Chaléons. This research project aims to measure, and thus gain a better understanding of, aerodynamic disturbance on wind turbine blades.

  • EOLINK's latest-generation floating wind turbine to be tested on Centrale Nantes’ SEM-REV offshore test site

    On 3 December, the company EOLINK and Centrale Nantes formally agreed to install a 5MW floating wind turbine on the SEM-REV test site, off the coast from Le Croisic. Since hosting FLOATGEN, the first floating wind turbine in France on site from 2018, Centrale Nantes is pushing ahead and is set to welcome EOLINK shortly with its innovative and promising wind turbine prototype.

  • Alexis Bazin, of the TSM research group, helps out Vendée Globe skipper Sébastien Destremau

    Alexis Bazin is an assistant engineer in the TSM research group (LHEEA) at Centrale Nantes. As a specialist in a particular model of lithium battery, he was contacted on a matter of urgency by a Vendée Globe Skipper, Sébastien Destremau, to help him pass the endurance test following an unsuccessful initial attempt. Sébastien Destremau's boat is equipped with an electric motor. The Vendée Globe class measurement rules require that competing boats must be able to sail at an average of 5 knots for 5 hours. The endurance test is used to verify this capacity and must be passed successfully in order to compete. To this end, a Vendée Globe official carries out the test with the skipper on the open sea. Alexis was contacted to see if he ascertain what was wrong with two batteries and help ensure that the second attempt was successful. We interviewed Alexis to find out what happened next!

  • Rogue waves form from random waves - tests in the towing tank
    September 15, 2020
    Rogue waves are very powerful ocean waves, which can form on both calm and rough seas. This sudden and unpredictable phenomenon may be rare, but it needs to be studied. It has recently been the subject of joint collaboration between researchers from Centrale Nantes - via the LHEEA - the CNRS and the universities of Paris and Lille. Tests in wave tanks have shown that a set of random waves can also provoke the formation of rogue waves, thus providing better understanding.
