The ISIS-CFD calculation code developed in the LHEEA in use again for the America's Cup!

The 36th edition of the America's Cup will take place from 6 to 21 March 2021 in Auckland. In order to optimize the aerodynamics of the boats and the hydrodynamics of the foils, the teams are using numerical modeling software.

One of the software tools in use is FINE™/Marine of NUMECA Int. whose fluid resolution module ISIS-CFD was entirely developed in the LHEEA (Centrale Nantes/CNRS) by the METHRIC team.

In 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) is using this software again, as in 2017. The new boat, for the 2021 race, is being designed entirely by calculation, proof of its reliability!

This flow calculation software is used for the numerical modeling of turbulent flows of incompressible viscous fluids around geometries of arbitrary complexity. The interest of the software lies in its various fields of application and especially in the maritime sector for design and optimization. In the specific context of the America's Cup, flow calculation software is used by the teams for both the boats' aerodynamics and foil hydrodynamics.

Development work has been ongoing since 2005, under the supervision of Centrale Nantes and CNRS through the CNRS and BPIFrance subsidiary FIST SA. International distribution, which started in 2006, is provided by NUMECA International with the software suite FINE (TM) / Marine, of which ISIS-CFD is the fluid solver.

So we wish good luck to the ETNZ team and may our code bring them closer to victory!
