Update on the MAN ENERGY SOLUTIONS Chair

Maritime transport is currently experiencing rapid growth and it is also the most efficient form of transport in terms of GHG emissions (gCO2/Tonne/km). Centrale Nantes, via the LHEEA, and MAN Energy Solutions have been working together on this subject since 2018, as part of an industrial chair on the gradual decarbonisation of marine propulsion and electricity production. Read on for an update on this chair.

Injection system test bench upgrade

The injection system test bench was recently improved in order to measure the introduction rate (instantaneous flow-rate, Zeuch method) of fuel during injection, in addition to existing measurements (instantaneous changes in pressure and needle lift and total mass injected).

This equipment is used to develop innovative injection systems to reduce engine consumption and to adapt their characteristics according to use.

Simulation study on biofuels

Biofuels are a possible option to decarbonise maritime transport because they can be available quickly and used without major modifications to existing engines. In this context, a simulation study is underway to evaluate and anticipate the effects on engine operation. It will help guide the first experimental tests due to be carried out on the injection bench and then on the engine test bench.

A PhD thesis underway

A PhD thesis got underway in September on the hybridisation of diesel engines with renewable energy sources for the production of electricity in isolated areas. A model of the Tahitian network combining diesel generators and renewable energy (PV, Hydro) is being developed. It will then be used to test improvements to reduce the consumption of diesel generators, while maintaining good grid stability.
