Abstract :As acceptable limits for exhaust emissions become stricter, LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is perceived by ship-owners as an alternative to marine fuel for various kinds of vessels. However, the main challenge in designing LNGfuelled ships is the fuel system. LNG is stored on-board in cryogenic tanks. As heat leaks into the reservoir, the composition of the vapour and liquid phase change. This process, known as weathering (or ageing), impacts the fuel’s quality notably in terms of methane number and calorific value. Consequently, it influences the engine’s behaviour (performances, emissions and operational profile). Hence, mastering the prediction of the LNG’s quality in the tank and through the fuel system is a key issue to consider accurately the overall energy balance. In the end, the engines’ consumption over a journey will be determined more precisely, perfecting technical and financial analyses. A model to predict LNG’s ageing has been developed using REFPROP’s GERG-2008 EOS (Equation of State) in co-simulation environments (Matlab/REFPROP and LMS.AMESim/REFPROP). The evolution of mass, pressure, temperature and composition in the liquid phase have been compared to experimental data. Close correlation was found between the experimental results and the model. This work is part of a PhD to:
1. Assess the evolution of LNG’s thermodynamic properties in fuel systems from the tanks to the engines’ inlets;
2. Enhance 0D/1D multi-physics libraries with components dedicated to marine LNG propulsion.
