"Comparison of the capacity factor of stationary wind turbines & weather-routed energy ships in the far-offshore"


Seminar Abstract:

A new concept is being investigated at LHEEA for far-offshore wind energy conversion. It is the energy ship, which is a sailing ship, propelled by the wind, underneath which is attached a water turbine which produces energy. The energy is stored on-board. A key advantage of the energy ship is that it is mobile. Thus, it can sail to the far-offshore wind resource, which can lead to a greater capacity factor than conventional wind turbines. The aim of this PhD project is to investigate how high this capacity factor can be, depending on the energy ship sailing capabilities and deployment area as well compare it with CF of stationary wind turbines in far offshore.
